Nation celebrating 65th Independence Day today

"Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we will redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance.... We end today a period of ill fortune, and India discovers herself again."

- Jawaharlal Nehru
(Speech on Indian Independence Day, 1947)

On 15 August 1947, India attained freedom from the British Rule. Every year, August 15 is celebrated as the Independence Day in India. This national festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm all over the country.

The Independence Day of any country is a moment of pride and glory. On this special occasion, rich tributes are paid to the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives and fought to free their motherland from the clutches of the oppressors - British who ruled the country.

The nation is celebrating its 65th Independence Day today with great fervour but simplicity. The day began with special prayers in mosques for the unity, solidarity and prosperity of the country.

The celebration began with a 31-gun salute at the federal capital and 21-gun salute at all the provincial headquarters. Quran Khawani are being held for the martyrs of the Pakistan Movement for their eternal peace.

The national flag has been hoisted on government and private buildings. Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani hoisted the national flag in a ceremony at 9:00am in Jinnah Convention Centre. The national anthem was also played on the occasion. The flag hoisting ceremonies were also held at provincial capitals.

The Armed Forces are following their own programmes for the purpose. Special prayers were offered for peace, solidarity and prosperity of the country and for the success of the long drawn struggle of the Kashmiris in all mosques on Sunday.

The government devised a comprehensive programme to celebrate the day with an objective to promote the Quaid’s message of faith, unity and discipline. Week-long celebrations are already under way throughout the country as numerous events including seminars, conferences, lectures, debates, speech contests, exhibitions, quiz competitions etc in national as well as local languages are being held.

Political agents in tribal areas are also organising programmes, keeping in view prevailing traditions and security environment. In Gilgit-Baltistan, the district administration are involving councilors and public representatives to organize functions.
